The essai follows the contraction de texte, and deals with a question connected to it. The student must take a position and defend their point of view in an organised piece of writing.

It is the more misunderstood of the two exercises. Many students believe they are being asked for a shortened dissertation, and produce an impersonal piece that recites what they know. Others go the other way, and offer an opinion with nothing to support it.

What is actually expected lies between the two: a thought of one's own, but argued, and fed by reading or precise examples.

The best essais I mark are not the most learned. They are the ones where the student genuinely has something to defend, and where you sense a person behind the paper.

Une position claire, prise dès l’introduction

Le correcteur doit savoir très vite ce que pense l’élève. Un essai qui ménage le suspense jusqu’à la conclusion perd son lecteur, et ses points.

Des arguments, pas des affirmations

Chaque idée avancée doit être justifiée. « C’est important » n’est pas un argument. Expliquer pourquoi, et en quoi, en est un.

Des exemples précis et variés

Les lectures de l’année sont les bienvenues, mais pas seulement. Un film, un fait d’actualité, une expérience personnelle peuvent servir, à condition d’être exploités et non simplement cités.

Un plan visible

Des paragraphes distincts, une progression, des transitions. La forme n’est pas un ornement : elle rend la pensée lisible, donc évaluable.

Une écriture assumée

L’essai autorise l’élève à parler en son nom. C’est l’un des rares exercices du lycée où on le lui demande. Encore faut-il qu’il ait quelque chose à dire.

Les erreurs qui coûtent le plus de points

Elles reviennent chaque année, dans des copies parfois très travaillées.

  • Treating the essai as a dissertation, with for and against and no position of one's own.
  • Giving an opinion without ever supporting it with an example or a line of reasoning.
  • Repeating the contracted text instead of responding to the question asked.
  • Lining up examples without using them, to show that you have references.
  • Writing one single block, with no paragraphs and no progression.
  • Running out of time because the contraction overran.

Comment nous travaillons cette épreuve

Concrètement, séance après séance.

  • We start from the question asked and learn to unfold it: what it really asks, and what it does not.
  • We build a position together, then look for what might contradict it — that is how it becomes solid.
  • We build a store of personal examples, drawn from their reading and their interests, that they can call on during the exam.
  • We work on paragraphs: one idea, one argument, one example, one partial conclusion.
  • I read the essais they write and flag the places where the student asserts instead of demonstrating.

Et en voie technologique ?

The essai exists only in the technological stream. It calls for a quality the general stream asks for less directly: daring to think for oneself, and doing it properly.
