Une œuvre au programme et son parcours

The dissertation frightens students because it is not satisfied with knowledge: it asks them to think. A student who has read the work and learned the course can still hand in a weak paper, simply because they did not answer the question asked.

And yet the dissertation may be the more methodical of the two exercises. The question almost always contains the essentials of the plan, provided you know how to read it.

It is that reading of the question we work on first, before saying a word about plans.

Most students believe they need brilliant ideas. In truth they need to know how to read a question. The ideas come afterwards, and they almost always come.

  • Reciting the course on the set text without ever returning to the question asked.
  • Confusing the problem to be solved with a rewording of the question.
  • Building a mechanical for-and-against plan, with no real progression.
  • Quoting the work from memory, vaguely, without locating the passages.
  • Neglecting transitions, which are the visible proof of the reasoning.
  • Spending an hour on the introduction and writing the third part in ten minutes.

Comment nous travaillons cette épreuve

Concrètement, séance après séance.

  • We begin with analyses of questions alone, without writing: ten questions analysed are worth more than one rushed dissertation.
  • We build detailed plans out loud, quickly, until the progression becomes second nature.
  • We go back through the set text to build a store of precise examples, ready to be used.
  • We work on transitions and closing remarks, often neglected and highly profitable.
  • I mark every dissertation handed in and point out exactly where the reasoning lost its way.

Et en voie technologique ?

In the technological stream the dissertation is replaced by the contraction de texte followed by an essai. What is required underneath is close: understand someone's reasoning, then build your own. I teach that exercise too.

Mastering the dissertation

Answering the question, without reciting the course.

The dissertation frightens students because it asks for a thought of their own, supported by a set text. We learn to build that thought methodically, until it becomes second nature.

  • Understanding what the question actually asks: weighing the words, finding the problem, avoiding the off-topic answer.
  • Building a plan that answers the question, rather than one that unrolls what you know.
  • Drawing on the set text and its associated theme with precise, well-chosen examples.
  • Analysing examples rather than quoting them: a marker sees the difference instantly.
  • Working on transitions and progression — often what separates a 12 from a 16.
  • Personal marking of your dissertations, paper after paper.

Pour qui ? For the student who knows the works but freezes in front of the question, or who writes three-part plans with no bearing on what was asked.
