The oral of the bac de français is the most dreaded paper, and it is also the one where teaching changes the most. Twenty minutes, one examiner, a text drawn from those studied during the year.

I sit on the examination board for this paper. I know what is decided in the first thirty seconds, what tips a mark one way or the other, and exactly what the examiner expects at each stage.

A prepared student is not one who has learned everything by heart. It is one who knows what is going to happen, and who has already lived through it several times.

From the examiner's seat, you can tell at once the student who understood their text from the one who memorised it. The first may be caught out by a question: they land on their feet. The second stops dead.

Une lecture expressive qui donne le ton

La lecture à voix haute du passage est notée. Elle dure une minute et elle installe, ou non, la confiance de l’examinateur pour les vingt minutes qui suivent.

Une explication linéaire qui avance

Suivre le texte ne veut pas dire le paraphraser. Chaque mouvement du texte doit apporter quelque chose à l’interprétation d’ensemble.

Une question de grammaire traitée sans panique

Elle est courte, elle est notée, et elle est très souvent négligée. Ce sont des points faciles pour qui s’y est préparé quelques heures.

Un entretien qui ressemble à une conversation

L’élève présente une œuvre qu’il a choisie et en discute. L’examinateur cherche une lecture personnelle, argumentée, pas une fiche récitée.

Une posture, un regard, un débit

L’oral s’évalue aussi sur la qualité de l’expression. Cela se travaille, et cela progresse vite.

Les erreurs qui coûtent le plus de points

Elles reviennent chaque année, dans des copies parfois très travaillées.

  • Reciting an explanation learned by heart, which collapses at the first question.
  • Paraphrasing the text while believing you are giving a close reading.
  • Discovering the grammar question on the day of the exam.
  • Choosing, for the interview, a work you have not really read.
  • Reading the text too fast, without breathing, without looking at the examiner.
  • Sitting in silence during the interview, waiting for the next question.

Comment nous travaillons cette épreuve

Concrètement, séance après séance.

  • We work through the close reading text by text, from the actual list drawn up by their class.
  • We run timed mock orals under the exact conditions of the exam, with thirty minutes of preparation.
  • I ask the questions an examiner asks, including the unsettling ones, so that none of them comes as a surprise.
  • We give real time to the grammar question: it is a highly profitable investment.
  • We prepare the interview around the chosen work, until the student can talk about it for ten minutes without notes.
  • We work on reading aloud: the rhythm, the pauses, the eye contact.

The format of the oral is the same in the technological stream, with a shorter list of texts. The interview is still built around a work the student has chosen.
