The contraction de texte is the first of the two exercises set in the written paper of the bac de français for the technological stream. The student is given an argumentative text and must reduce it to a quarter of its length, adding nothing of their own.

The exercise has a poor reputation, wrongly. It is in fact one of the most predictable in the exam: the criteria are explicit, and the work can be prepared for. A student who practises improves quickly, and the improvement shows in the mark.

The difficulty is not writing less. It is choosing what disappears. This is an exercise in reading before it is an exercise in writing.

This is the exercise where I see the most progress in a few sessions. The criteria are clear, so the work pays off quickly. A student who takes it seriously in February is not the same student in June.

La thèse de l’auteur, dégagée sans ambiguïté

Le correcteur vérifie d’abord une chose : l’élève a-t-il compris ce que défend le texte. Une contraction qui restitue des exemples mais manque la thèse est sanctionnée, même bien écrite.

Une hiérarchie respectée

Toutes les phrases du texte n’ont pas le même poids. Les idées directrices restent, les illustrations disparaissent. C’est ce tri qui constitue l’essentiel du travail.

Une reformulation personnelle

Recopier des phrases entières est pénalisé. Il faut redire avec ses propres mots, ce qui suppose d’avoir compris. Seuls les termes techniques sans équivalent se conservent tels quels.

Le point de vue de l’auteur, jamais le sien

L’élève s’efface complètement. Pas de commentaire, pas de jugement, pas de « selon l’auteur ». Le texte est restitué de l’intérieur, à la même personne que l’original.

Un enchaînement qui tient debout

Le résultat doit se lire comme un texte, pas comme une liste de notes. Les liens logiques du texte de départ doivent rester perceptibles.

Les erreurs qui coûtent le plus de points

Elles reviennent chaque année, dans des copies parfois très travaillées.

  • Opening with “the text talks about”: a contraction restates the reasoning, it does not introduce it.
  • Missing the argument and summarising the examples, which are the first thing to cut.
  • Copying sentences from the text instead of rewording them.
  • Giving your own opinion, or commenting on the author's reasoning.
  • Going over or under the required length, beyond the tolerance allowed.
  • Forgetting to state the word count at the end of the paper.
  • Spending three hours on the contraction and rushing the essai that follows.

Comment nous travaillons cette épreuve

Concrètement, séance après séance.

  • We begin with the reading: finding the argument, the steps of the reasoning, and what is merely illustration.
  • We practise rewording, sentence by sentence, until it becomes second nature.
  • We work on counting words under real conditions, so that it stops being a last-minute worry.
  • We divide the four hours between the two exercises, and we hold to it in practice.
  • I read the contractions they write and show, on their own sentences, what could still have gone.

Et en voie technologique ?

This exercise belongs to the technological stream: students in the general stream never meet it. The skill it builds, however, serves everywhere — in higher education as in working life.
